Since its founding in 1865, Zenith has steadily earned its name as a leader in precision and performance, from classic movements to groundbreaking designs. The chronograph is one area of watchmaking where Zenith has excelled. The Manufacture has preserved and fostered its spirit of innovation without ever failing to explore new boundaries, particularly with the El Primero chronograph and its countless evolutions, with several world-firsts and record-breaking accomplishments to its name.

Let’s dive into the details of these 2022 novelties!

The Chronomaster Open

To really emphasise their inventiveness, pioneering movements deserve to be showcased in unique and innovative designs. Originally launched in 2003, the Chronomaster Open returns in a completely redesigned form – inside and out – to shine even more light on its beating heart and allow the wearer to witness ZENITH's mastery of the high-frequency chronograph.

The new Chronomaster Open, which comes in a more moderate 39.5mm steel or rose gold case, revisits the legendary tri-color dial arrangement with a transparent twist. The three counter colours are preserved thanks to a hesalite crystal element that serves as a viewable sub-dial while providing a view of the silicon star-shaped escape wheel, as opposed to shutting out the little seconds counter totally as was the case with the previous iteration of the Chronomaster Open.

The aperture has also been reworked, with circular openings with chamfered edges replacing the previous version's applied "framing," displaying the movement with more straight bridges and a more contemporary grey tone.

The newly created movement, which is powered by the El Primero 3604 calibre, is based on the El Primero 3600 1/10th of a second automatic high-frequency calibre, but with a more open architecture. The new Chronomaster Open is more than just a facelift; it's imbued with the lines and characteristics of the latest generation of the Chronomaster collection, somewhere between the sleek sportiness of the Chronomaster Sport and the historically inspired Chronomaster Original for a modern distillation of the essential Zenith El Primero chronograph.

The Chronomaster Sport: Gold Standard

Zenith once again raised the bar for automatic sporty chronographs with the release of the Chronomaster Sport in 2021. The Chronomaster Sport is already a modern chronograph icon in the making, having won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève 2021 "Chronograph" prize. Zenith revealed the latest additions to the collection at Watches & Wonder, with new references created in precious metals.

Full gold chronographs have a long history with Zenith, dating back to before the El Primero. Zenith created the Chronomaster Sport fully in rose gold, including the bracelet and engraved bezel with a 1/10th of a second scale, proving that performance and luxury don't have to be mutually contradictory. The Chronomaster Sport in rose gold is precisely completed with satin-brushed and polished surfaces to bring out the warm glow of the precious metal. It is available with either a black or white dial with the trademark El Primero tricolour counters with golden hands and attached markers.

The Chronomaster Sport now comes in a "two-tone" design, with a shimmering silver sunray-patterned tricolour dial that combines the toughness of stainless steel with the opulence of rose gold.

The first boutique edition of the steel Chronomaster Sport is also being unveiled at Watches & Wonders, and will be exclusively available in Zenith physical and online boutiques throughout the world. This version is distinguished by its engraved ceramic bezel, which is made up of three independent coloured ceramic parts that have been smoothly fused together in the iconic El Primero tricolour palette of grey, anthracite, and blue.
