MING, Fleming and J.N. Shapiro have announced the formation of the Alternative Horological Alliance (AHA) to support and promote independent watchmaking beyond established, conventional structures.

Unlike larger, established brands, these independents often push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship, offering unique perspectives and pioneering techniques that enrich the watchmaking industry. Supporting independent brands not only fosters diversity and creativity but also ensures that the traditional skills and innovative spirit of watchmaking continue to thrive. By backing these trailblazers, enthusiasts and collectors contribute to a dynamic and evolving landscape that values originality and craftsmanship, sustaining the essence of fine watchmaking for future generations.

What is the AHA?

Thomas Fleming of Fleming Watches shared that their mutual respect and shared ideals have fostered a strong connection between them. Despite having unique approaches to watchmaking, they understand that their shared passion as collectors reduces the risk of competition and instead fosters collaboration. The AHA offers a platform for brands like theirs to unite and work on joint projects, such as the new tantalum bracelet.

Ming Thein, founder of Horologer MING, explained that the formation of the AHA was driven by a desire to enhance their collective strengths and the enjoyment of working together. By pooling resources, each brand can overcome individual limitations and achieve more. For example, J.N. Shapiro might produce cases for them or serve as a service point for Fleming in Asia. They aim to adopt an openly collaborative approach, with joint exhibitions providing a stronger incentive for collectors to visit in person during Geneva Watch Days, compared to any single brand's effort.

The three founders also announced their first collaboration with a tantalum bracelet made by J.N. Shapiro and based on a MING design, available in 21mm, 20mm and 19mm versions to fit the watches from all their three brands.

Open Membership?

While membership of AHA is currently limited to MING, Fleming and J.N. Shapiro, the three brands agree that future members are welcome subject to unanimous agreement by the founding members.

Shapiro concludes, “At the end of the day we know that what we are trying to do is a little different from most conventional watch brands out there. We put a piece of ourselves out there; our names are on the dials. It can be a little isolating to feel that you are alone in this. Through the AHA we have found kinship with like-minded founders and friends. This is probably just the first of many things we find ourselves doing together”.
