Formex Brings A New Perspective To The Integrated Sports Watch With The Aria Manufature Chronometer
For nearly a decade, independent Swiss watchmaker Formex has quietly established itself as one of modern horology’s most compelling disruptors. Under the leadership of Raphaël Granito, the Biel/Bienne-based brand has steadily built a loyal following through its fusion of technical innovation, ergonomic engineering and exceptional value all delivered with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic.

Now, Formex takes its most ambitious step yet with the launch of the new Aria Manufacture Chronometer, an ultra-thin integrated-bracelet timepiece powered by the brand’s first manufacture movement: the FX01 micro-rotor calibre, developed in collaboration with Swiss movement specialist Horage. At 40 mm wide, just 6.9 mm thick and weighing only 78 grams, the Aria represents a significant evolution for the brand not simply in terms of movement architecture, but also in how Formex approaches design itself. The watch appears almost elemental in its construction, with flowing organic surfaces and seamless transitions that evoke something shaped gradually by wind, water and time. The limited founders edition will be restricted to 100 pieces across three dial colours inspired by the natural landscapes of Switzerland.
The Movement Comes First
The Aria’s defining characteristic lies beneath its minimalist exterior. “As a small independent watch brand, you simply cannot dream of reinventing the ultra-thin mechanical wristwatch without having the right movement in the first place,” says Raphaël Granito. For years, Formex worked successfully with respected Swiss base calibres. But the brand’s vision for the Aria required something entirely different: an ultra-thin automatic movement that could deliver high performance without sacrificing comfort, durability or practicality.

That search led Formex to Horage, the innovative Swiss manufacture founded in 2009 by Andreas Felsl and Tzuyu Huang. Known for designing proprietary calibres from the ground up, Horage provided the ideal foundation for what would become the FX01 a heavily refined evolution of its acclaimed K2 micro-rotor architecture. The result is a movement measuring just 2.9 mm thick, yet offering chronometer-certified precision, anti-magnetic properties and an impressive power reserve exceeding 72 hours.
Reimagining the Micro-Rotor
At the heart of the FX01 lies a micro-rotor system a sophisticated movement architecture historically associated with haute horlogerie. Unlike conventional automatic movements, where the oscillating rotor sits above the calibre, a micro-rotor is integrated directly within the movement itself. This allows for a significantly thinner overall profile while revealing more of the movement’s architecture through the sapphire caseback.

One of the longstanding technical challenges with micro-rotor movements, however, is winding efficiency. Because the rotor is physically smaller, it naturally generates less rotational force. Formex and Horage addressed this by engineering a custom tungsten micro-rotor. Thanks to tungsten’s exceptional density, the rotor generates considerably greater momentum despite its compact size. Combined with an ultra-efficient mainspring system, the FX01 improves winding efficiency by approximately 55 percent, allowing just one hour on the wrist to generate up to ten hours of power reserve.
The movement also incorporates a flexible geartrain pinion system that eliminates backlash during time-setting. By maintaining constant tension between the gears, the minute hand responds instantly and precisely to crown adjustments, allowing for smoother operation and more accurate synchronization. Further enhancing performance is a full silicon regulating system, including the hairspring, pallet fork and escape wheel. Lightweight, anti-magnetic and highly resistant to corrosion, silicon improves long-term reliability while reducing friction and the need for lubrication.
Visually, the FX01 receives a finish that feels unmistakably Formex. The bridges feature galvanic black gold plating combined with vertical brushing and laser-textured cut-outs that expose deeper architectural layers of the movement. Hand-brushed bevels add contrast throughout, while the tungsten micro-rotor itself carries engraved Formex branding.
Sculpted Like Nature
The Aria’s design philosophy is rooted in organic form. Each watch begins as a block of Grade 5 titanium the same Ti-6Al-4V alloy used in aerospace and surgical applications for its exceptional strength, corrosion resistance and lightweight properties. Yet while machining titanium is already a complex undertaking, the finishing process is what truly defines the Aria. The case and every bracelet link are individually hand-brushed to follow the flowing contours of the design. Rounded surfaces transition seamlessly into polished bevels that catch light with surgical precision, creating a refined interplay between matte texture and reflective detailing.

Even the bracelet links have been subtly curved to improve ergonomics. The effect is almost imperceptible visually, but immediately noticeable on the wrist. The result is a watch that feels remarkably fluid and lightweight less like a traditional sports watch and more like a carefully sculpted object designed around comfort and movement.
Despite its slim proportions, the Aria’s dial architecture introduces surprising dimensionality. Stamped from a single piece of brass before being lacquered and matte-finished, the dial resembles a sculptural landscape carved by time. Each applied index sits atop a slightly elevated platform, while the surrounding surface falls away in a soft concave curve that creates visual depth without adding thickness. At 6 o’clock sits a discreet small seconds display, balanced by the Formex logo integrated at 12 o’clock.

The hands and applied indices combine brushed surfaces with polished bevels, enhancing both contrast and legibility. The founders edition is offered in three distinctive colourways. Selva Green evokes the richness of forest terrain with warm organic tones and amber-hued luminous accents. Ardesia Grey channels the cool, architectural elegance of wet mountain slate. Denso Blue presents perhaps the boldest personality of the trio a dense matte navy surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, dramatically contrasting against the rose gold-coloured hands and indices.
