ALTO, a brand known for combining technical skill with bold design has once again set a new standard. With two impressive versions of its signature ART 01, the brand shows that modern watchmaking can be both an art and a display of precise engineering. Both pieces have already gained attention with their GPHG nominations, recognizing their exceptional craftsmanship.
ART 01 Falcon Eye: A Dial That Breathes Light
Limited to just 12 units, the ART 01 Falcon Eye marks ALTO’s first venture into what it calls a "Métier d’Art" creation. At its center lies the Falcon Eye stone, a rare mineral known for its shimmering reflections that shift from stormy blue-gray to black, highlighted by golden flecks. Once mainly used in jewelry, this stone poses significant challenges in watchmaking however, ALTO has turned these hurdles into a success.
Creating this dial required developing a completely new method in stone marquetry. Each dial starts as a thick block of Falcon Eye, carefully sliced, machined into six exact segments, and hand-polished to perfection. The stone’s natural fibers determine the final appearance, forming a subtle gradient that darkens toward the center, reminiscent of a falcon’s keen gaze. Nearly a year of painstaking effort resulted in 12 dials, making each one a unique work of art. The 3N yellow gold case follows the proportions of the original ART 01, with its satin-finished surfaces accentuating the dial’s shape. It comes with a green nubuck strap that balances softness and boldness, creating a harmonious blend of warmth, modernity, and tactile elegance.
ART 01 Monochrome Grey: Brutalism in Titanium
While the Falcon Eye showcases mineral artistry, the ART 01 Monochrome Grey pays tribute to titanium’s raw strength. With a microblasted finish, the titanium case weighs only 56 grams but commands a presence that contradicts its lightness. In ALTO’s view, grey is not just neutral; it represents the balance of light and shadow, substance and movement, evident in surfaces that change from deep black to steely grey with different angles and lighting.
The Monochrome Grey exemplifies restraint and precision. Each curve and transition is executed with care—no extra detail, no decoration, just the essential design and engineering distilled into a wristwatch. Its brutalist look blends industrial elements with intimacy, feeling both solid and fleeting.
