Grand Seiko Revives A 1968 Classic: The 45GS Returns With Modern Precision
In 1968, Grand Seiko introduced the 45GS, a watch that followed the iconic 44GS—the timepiece that defined the Grand Seiko Style. While both models shared the same striking design, the 45GS marked a major breakthrough with its first manual-winding high-beat movement, the Caliber 4520, offering enhanced stability and precision. Now, over five decades later, Grand Seiko reinterprets this milestone with two new limited-edition re-creations: one in stainless steel and the other in 18K yellow gold, paying homage to the original variations from 1968.
A Faithful Yet Modern Evolution
Staying true to the original, the new models retain the distinctive angular case design, featuring flat, mirror-polished surfaces and curved sides—a signature of Grand Seiko's craftsmanship. Thanks to modern advancements in watchmaking, the re-creations achieve an even more refined play of light and shadow, a hallmark of the Grand Seiko Style established in 1967.

The dial remains historically accurate, with colors and lettering closely mirroring the vintage 45GS. At 12 o’clock, the "Seiko" logo reflects the character of the original typography, while 6 o’clock proudly displays GS, Hi-Beat, and 36000, signifying the movement’s high frequency. The Daini Seikosha factory logo, a nod to the birthplace of the 45GS, is also present—deepening the connection to Grand Seiko’s heritage.
A Cutting-Edge High-Beat Movement
Powering these re-creations is the latest in Grand Seiko’s high-beat innovation—the Caliber 9SA4. Like the original Caliber 4520, it beats at 10 times per second, ensuring exceptional accuracy. However, thanks to Grand Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels, it now delivers an impressive 80-hour power reserve.

Beyond performance, the movement is crafted to enhance the tactile and auditory experience of hand-winding. The click and click spring have been precisely engineered for an ideal winding sensation, both in feel and sound. While the original 45GS had a closed case back, the re-creations feature a transparent sapphire case back, allowing enthusiasts to admire the refined movement and the bird-like pecking motion of the click in action.
Limited Edition Release
The 18K yellow gold version will be exclusive to Grand Seiko boutiques, while the stainless steel model will also be available at select retail partners worldwide.
With this revival, Grand Seiko not only honors its past but also reaffirms its commitment to high-beat precision and timeless design, ensuring that the spirit of the 45GS lives on for a new generation of collectors.
