Birth of the 9R caliber

The story of the 9R Spring Drive began in 1977 with Yoshikazu Akahane, a young engineer at Suwa Seikosha (now Seiko Epson Corporation) whose dream was to create an ideal watch combining the accuracy of an electronic timekeeper with power derived from a mainspring. After more than 20 years of development, and more than 600 prototypes and countless hours of fine-tuning, the Spring Drive technology became a reality with the 9R series as its pinnacle. The dream was realized in 1999 with the first commercially available Spring Drive movement. In 2004, enhancements to the platform allowed the first Grand Seiko Spring Drive, which featured automatic winding and three days of power reserve.

An incredible symphony of springs and gears

At the heart of the 9R Spring Drive is an ingenious mechanism that merges mechanical energy with quartz regulation. Unlike traditional mechanical movements that rely on an escapement to regulate time, the 9R Spring Drive uses a tri-synchro regulator system. This regulator manages three types of energy—mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic—ensuring the movement’s precision.

Mechanical Energy: The power is generated by a mainspring, similar to a traditional mechanical watch. However, instead of an escapement, the Spring Drive uses the tri-synchro regulator to control the release of energy.

Electrical Energy: The mainspring drives a tiny rotor that generates electricity. This electricity powers a quartz crystal, which provides a reference signal for the movement.

Electromagnetic Energy: The quartz crystal’s signal controls an electromagnetic brake that regulates the speed of the glide wheel, which ensures the movement's precise timing.

This blend of energies allows the 9R Spring Drive to maintain remarkable accuracy—within ±1 second per day. This level of precision rivals that of high-end quartz movements while maintaining the craftsmanship and allure of a mechanical movement.

Gliding In Style

One of the most striking features of the 9R Spring Drive caliber is its signature glide motion of the seconds hand. Unlike the ticking motion seen in quartz watches or the sweeping motion in mechanical ones, the Spring Drive's seconds hand moves in an almost hypnotic, continuous glide. This fluid motion symbolizes the seamless passage of time and reflects Grand Seiko’s philosophy of "The Nature of Time."

Another unique aspect is the absence of the traditional escapement mechanism found in mechanical watches. Instead, the tri-synchro regulator replaces the need for an escapement, leading to smoother energy transmission, reduced wear and tear, and longer-lasting precision. Furthermore, the 9R Spring Drive is extremely efficient. It has a longer power reserve compared to many traditional mechanical movements, typically lasting up to 72 hours when fully wound. Grand Seiko's mastery of micro-engineering and the use of high-quality materials also ensure that the movement remains highly durable, resistant to shocks, and extremely reliable over time.

Celebrating 20 years of this technical breakthrough, Grand Seiko launched a limited-edition timepiece inspired by the morning glow of the Hotaka Mountain range in Summer. The new SBGE305 - Caliber 9R 20th Anniversary Limited Edition Spring Drive, is an ode to the spectacular vision, countless hours of research and painstaking precision that led to the invention of this unique caliber. The dark red dial of this new Sport Collection GMT takes inspiration from a vivid sunrise as it illuminates the steep landscape of Japan’s Hotaka mountain range in summer. As with all Grand Seiko GMT watches, its ease of use is ensured through the local hour hand, which can be set independently, forward or backward, while the watch is running, ensuring precision is maintained when changing time zones according to one’s travels. Set against the dark red dial, the silver GMT hand further enhances the high legibility for which Grand Seiko is renowned.

The ideals of a Grand Seiko sports watch are fully apparent in this new creation, which features a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. The crown and the case back are secured by screw-down mechanisms, and the watch is water resistant to 20 bar. Beating at the heart of this creation is the 9R66 caliber which consist of both automatic as well as manual winding and offers an unbeatable accuracy of ±1 second per day (±15 seconds per month). The watch is weekend ready with 72 hours of power reserve and also offers a dual time function with 24 hour hand.
