Rolex : The Underdogs
When it comes to premium and prestigious watches, which is the first—and often the only—brand that springs to your mind? It’s none other than Rolex- the crown of the watch world. Rolex has been so ingrained in a worldwide society that it now stands for much more than the watches it brands; it stands for riches, success, style statement and quality.
What put the brand on the horological throne? Rolex's unequalled success among watch companies can be attributed to the company's technological innovation, marketing acumen, design consistency, financial independence, and selected scarcity.
However, a common feature we observe on a global front is the non-availability of these esteemed timepieces. The famous "wish-list" syndrome! When you do walk into any Rolex shop (Authorized Dealers) around the world, you will almost certainly notice the 'Rolex" green, tastefully done furniture, and a lot of empty watch cabinets.
If you are fortunate enough to come across certain watches, they will certainly be "reserved." Many watches have witnessed an unreal 'appreciation' in price because of the social media age, resulting in a shortage of supply from the brand.
But what if we told you that there are a few underrated crowns that are just as nice as the 'hyped' watches ? The only difference is that these might actually be available!
Got your attention? Let’s dive in.
ROLEX DATEJUST 36
The combination of blue and steel is quite the head-turner. The beautiful shape of the 36 mm Oyster case, which is furnished with a fluted bezel, is highlighted by light reflections on the case sides and lugs. The ROLEX Datejust has traversed eras while maintaining the enduring codes that have made it one of the most recognised and identifiable watches, particularly in its classic incarnations. The fluted bezel is still a mark of distinction today, and it's always made of gold.
ROLEX CELLINI MOONPHASE
Benvenuto Cellini probably had no idea that his name would become the name of one of the most remarkable collections produced by a Swiss watchmaker. Dress watches from the Cellini series are reminiscent of legendary dress timepieces from the past. The Cellini, which is recognised for Rolex's sports steel' tool watches with specialised purposes, is set to be a watch for everyone.
The only Rolex with a centre hand date function is an absolute delight on the wrist, measuring 39mm and featuring a Moon phase complex in an 18 carat Everose Gold casing.
ROLEX AIR-KING
The ROLEX Air-King, commonly known as the 'underdog,' is one of Rolex's most under-appreciated timepieces. According to rumours, the watch will be phased out soon (which means you may see a sharp increase in the aftermarket prices). During World War II, the collection honoured RAF pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain.
The black dial with navigational reading and 3-6-9 hour markers, as well as a green second hand, makes this dial pop, and it comes with a COSC certified and a gorgeous 40mm size. We don’t know about you, but we’re surely happy to see sports steel watches! A true homage to aviation.
ROLEX EXPLORER 1
The ROLEX Explorer line is undoubtedly the most adaptable in the inventory; the watch's cost and style make it ideal for everyday wear. Rolex debuted the Explorer 1 with a 36mm dial with Oyster steel and Yellow Gold this year, in 2021. Most watch purchasers are currently unaware of this watch; we consider it a hidden gem that will be discovered only later. Incorporating gold to this simple yet gorgeous design, as well as Rolex's toughness, makes this a near-perfect watch.
ROLEX LADY-DATEJUST
The ROLEX Lady–Datejust 28mm in Oyster steel and Everose gold with a White Mother of Pearl diamond-set dial and an oyster bracelet can attest to all of this. With all the benefits of a Rolex, it may be the 'one watch' for any lady.
By its own nature, mother-of-pearl is full of mystery and surprises. Mother-of-pearl is never artificially coloured at Rolex. Instead, a great deal of expertise and talent is given to just accentuating its natural beauty and keeping its original colours. Because all mother-of-pearl dials are one-of-a-kind, you'll never see another one on another wrist.
Rolex is a combination of elegance and simplicity, with a splash of luxury thrown in for good measure. It may be the king of the watch world, but these underdogs can add the oomph to your coveted watch collection.
