Founded in 2010 in Antwerp, Belgium, Ressence is the brainchild of Benoît Mintiens, an industrial designer with a portfolio spanning high-speed trains to aircraft cabins. Unlike traditional watchmakers, Mintiens approached horology from a purely user-centric, industrial design perspective. The brand's name, a portmanteau of "Renaissace" and "essence”, perfectly captures its mission to deconstruct and radically reinvent the mechanical watch. Guided by the motto "Beyond Hands," Mintiens sought to eliminate the physical barrier between the wearer and the time. Instead of relying on conventional overlapping hands, he envisioned a flush, two-dimensional display that prioritises intuitive, ergonomic readability and an organic, pebble-like aesthetic.
The cornerstone of this avant-garde approach is the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS). This proprietary module creates a dynamic, ever-changing dial where co-planar discs rotate around one another like moons orbiting a planet, all set smoothly beneath a deeply domed sapphire crystal. To further streamline the silhouette, the brand famously eliminated the traditional winding crown, moving the time-setting functions to a rotating caseback lever. Ressence continually pushes the boundaries of physics in watchmaking, most notably by filling the dials of its Type 3 and Type 5 models with oil to eliminate light refraction and create a flawless optical illusion of a digital screen. While the brand initially relied on modified Swiss base calibres to drive these complex modules, it recently marked a new era of absolute mechanical independence with the Type 11, introducing its first fully integrated, purpose-built in-house movement.
