Christie's Geneva to Auction Collector Mohammed Zaman's Timepieces
Christie's has announced it will auction off "Passion for Time", an exceptional private collection of watches, in Geneva on 6 November. Assembled over 40 years by avid collector Mohammed Zaman, the collection is considered the greatest single-owner watch collection to come to market in recent history.
Highlights of the sale include:
A Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 worn by Marlon Brando in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now. Brando engraved his name on the caseback and modified the watch by removing the bezel and bracelet. Estimated value: CHF 1-2 million.
Philippe Dufour's Grande et Petite Sonnerie No. 1, an extremely rare minute repeater from 1992 that catapulted Dufour to legend status. One of only 4 examples made. Estimated value: CHF 4-6 million.
The George Daniels Anniversary No. 00, the first of only 4 platinum watches made by the legendary independent watchmaker to commemorate his invention of the co-axial escapement. Estimated value: CHF 1.2-2.4 million.
A rose gold Rolex Stelline Ref. 6062 "Triple Calendar Moonphase" that once belonged to noted collector Gordon Bethune. One of the best preserved and rarest Reference 6062s known. Estimated value: CHF 1-2 million.
The collection will be exhibited in Hong Kong, New York, and Dubai before the 6 November auction in Geneva.
Mohammed Zaman's passion for watches began over 40 years ago when he received two watches as gifts. His first purchase was a Rolex Day-Date in 1978. Over decades of relentless pursuit at watch shows and auctions globally, Zaman amassed a world-class collection reflecting the history of watchmaking.
Christie's pioneered the wristwatch auction segment 20 years ago and continues to break records, including achieving the highest price for any vintage wristwatch at auction in 2019. With the "Passion for Time" sale, the auction house expects to set more benchmarks for important private watch collections.
