J.R.D. Tata, or Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, was the Chairman of Tata Sons which later went on to establish Titan Company Limited, a brand we are all familiar with as the leading manufacturer of timepieces in India. He was known to be a connoisseur of luxury timepieces, and his choice of watches often included an amalgamation of both form and function. Not only was he a pioneering industrialist and philanthropist, but was also known for his personal interests and refined tastes. His relationship with watches is particularly interesting as it reflects his broader appreciation for quality and craftsmanship.

One of the most notable aspects of J.R.D. Tata’s watch collection was his preference for Patek Philippe, a brand renowned for its exceptional watchmaking skills. Patek Philippe is synonymous with luxury and precision, and Tata’s choice of this brand highlights his penchant for the finer things in life. For him, watches were not just functional instruments but also symbols of status and precision. His collection likely included some of the most esteemed models from high-end brands, reflecting his success and the values he held in high regard, such as excellence and meticulousness. His appreciation for high-quality watches mirrored his broader approach to business and life, emphasising the importance of craftsmanship and attention to detail in all endeavours.

Beyond their material value, Tata’s watches had personal and cultural significance. They represented not just a luxury but also a reflection of his personality and his contributions to society. Such was his impact that on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of his first flight in India, Titan Company Limited unveiled a special timepiece called Titan Aviator which was a clapback to his enduring love for all things aviation. Touted as one of the finest timepieces during that time from the Titan portfolio, the watch was catered towards young men and women between the ages of 25-40 who have a keen interest in aviation. The unique design story behind this launch was perfect for anyone who has a unique sense of style.

Tata was also keen to institutionalize the onboarding of exceptional leadership talent into the Tata group. To ensure this, he created the Tata Administrative Service (TAS) in 1956. Over the years, many TAS officers have gone on to assume leadership positions in the Tata group. Some of them have also been pioneers whose stories of success have served as an inspiration to many young minds. One such officer is Xerxes Desai, the man who created Titan and the household names that we all know and admire today.

When Tata breathed his last in a Geneva hospital on November 29th 1993, it was truly the end of an era of fearless innovation, visionary thinking and magnanimous nobility.
