Measuring elapsed time intervals with precision is one of the most used functions in watch - the Chronograph. This one is quite a no-brainer. For the watches nominated for Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG 2023) this year we are looking at mechanical watches with at least one chronograph indication.

1. GRAND SEIKO - TENTAGRAPH
Grand Seiko has introduced the Tentagraph, its first mechanical chronograph, to its Evolution 9 sports watch collection. At the heart of the watch’s chronograph movement is Grand Seiko’s ground-breaking high-beat Caliber 9SA5. The new Tentagraph Caliber 9SC5, like the older Caliber 9SA5, ticks ten times per second, providing excellent precision when determining both the passage of time and the hour of the day. The watch has a power reserve of three days, even with the chronograph running, thanks to its energy-efficient escapement and two barrels, making the Tentagraph the 10-beat chronograph with the longest power reserve in the industry today. 4. DE BETHUNE - DB EIGHT
Announcing its 31st in-house caliber, De Bethune has introduced the DB Eight with great fanfare. It follows in the footsteps of other classic single-button chronographs like the DB1 and DB8 with its mono-pusher design. The DB Eight represents a new step forward in De Bethune’s investigation of the single-push chronograph. The DB28 Maxichrono may be De Bethune’s most cutting-edge chronograph, but the DB1 was the brand’s first timepiece to feature a chronograph, and it was a traditional two-counter mono-pusher chronograph in the best tasteful 20th-century chronograph tradition. 5. SINGER REIMAGINED - 1969 CHRONO
Singer Reimagined timepieces are by definition a love letter to the vintage design of iconic 60’s and 70’s timepieces, now enhanced by functional improvements and state of the art horological engineering. 1969 Chronograph is the quintessential expression of Singer Reimagined high-watchmaking approach, featuring the most recent version of the famous Agengraphe caliber. 6. PETERMANN BÉDAT - CHRONOGRAPHE RATTRAPANTE
Reference 2941. Monopusher split-seconds chronograph with jumping minute counter. The case, made of platinum, has been entirely redesigned, recomposed, with individually soldered, stepped lugs; classic and elegant in its finishes and size (38.6 millimeters), it is resolutely contemporary in its logic and design. An authentic work of the 21st century, every detail affirms its origin: carved with a CNC machine with the intention, guided by designer Barth Nussbaumer (Barth.studio), of “tapping the full potential of advanced technology”.
To the basic column chronograph, the two watchmakers have added a split-second function. Allowing for two intervals of time that begin at the same instant to be measured in parallel, it is particularly challenging to design, construct and adjust. The 2941 takes the exercise a leap further with an additional safety that effectively prevents an unintentional reset of the stopwatch.
