Unity In Time: Titan Celebrates 40 Years With A Celestial Tribute
Celebrating four decades of excellence, Titan Watches marked its 40th anniversary by paying homage to one of India’s most iconic milestones—the historic space journey of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut. In 1984, aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11, Mr. Sharma etched his name in history as he observed Earth from space and famously declared, “Saare Jahaan Se Achha,” in response to being asked how India looked from above. This phrase, brimming with patriotism, resonated deeply with millions, embodying the spirit of a unified India.
In commemorating this significant moment, Titan unveiled the ‘Unity Watch’, a celestial-inspired limited-edition timepiece that beautifully encapsulates the story of unity and human potential as seen through Mr. Sharma’s eyes. With only 300 pieces crafted, the Unity Watch draws direct inspiration from his unique perspective of Earth from space—a view that emphasizes interconnectedness and boundless possibilities. Its design and name symbolize a vision of togetherness and shared dreams for humanity, resonating with Titan’s legacy of innovation and craftsmanship.
The official launch of the Unity Watch took place during a heartwarming felicitation ceremony at Lupa, Bengaluru, where Titan honored Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma by presenting him with the first watch from the limited series. During this intimate gathering, Mr. Sharma recounted mesmerizing stories of his space journey, sharing the awe-inspiring sight of Earth—a unifying perspective that transcends geographical boundaries and reinforces our collective identity on this shared planet.
Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma shared heartfelt words at the event, speaking about his transformative view of the planet during his spaceflight: “Time takes on a different meaning when you view our planet from space. Forty years ago, when I gazed at Earth from above, I saw no boundaries—just one beautiful, unified Earth. It is time to rework our outdated societal model that prefers confrontation over cooperation to protect our beautiful home for future generations. I’m deeply touched that Titan has captured this perspective in the Unity Watch. Its celestial dial features our beloved India, and the inscription on the watch serves as a reminder that while we measure time in seconds, we ought to measure progress in terms of the peace dividend achieved by us. This timepiece not only commemorates a journey into space but celebrates every Indian’s ability to reach for the stars.”
The event also shed light on the intricate process of designing and creating the commemorative Unity Watch. Titan’s design team shared insights into the craftsmanship involved, drawing parallels between the precision, expertise, and innovation required in both watchmaking and space exploration. These discussions further highlighted the shared ethos of “Make in India” evident in Titan’s enduring journey in horology and India’s remarkable strides in space science.
Commenting on the launch of the Unity Watch, Mr. Rahul Shukla, Vice President & Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Titan Watches, reflected on the brand's remarkable journey: “For four decades, Titan has woven the soul of India into every timepiece we create. This year, we proudly mark the 40th anniversary of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s legendary space journey—a moment that united India in its limitless aspirations. The Unity Watch, crafted by our in-house team, embodies the innovation and artistry of 'Make in India.' It celebrates space, science, and our leap forward in creating watches that honor India’s remarkable legacy. With this launch, we reaffirm our commitment to crafting timepieces that embody and celebrate the indomitable spirit propelling India forward.”
Through the Unity Watch, Titan not only celebrates its 40-year legacy but also reaffirms the timeless values of innovation, unity, and shared human aspirations—a fitting tribute to a milestone that continues to inspire generations.
