Watches And Wonders 2025: A. Lange & Söhne Ultra-Thin 1815 Introduces The Manufacture’s 75th Caliber
There are watches that easily fit under a cuff and then there are some that do it so much that they nearly disappear. The wafer-thin slenderness of such timepieces yields a rare proportion-perfection that even in practice only along the vertical axis serves the unique satisfaction of having the timepiece sit absolutely flush against the cuff. As such, it doesn’t appear that you’re wearing the watch but more like it being a natural extension of your own wrist. Of course, many do it by cutting corners, but not A. Lange & Söhne. The Saxon watchmaking house introduces the new ultra-thin 1815 timepiece at the Watches and Wonders 2025. At 6.4 millimeters, it doesn’t challenge the nickels posing as watches, however it retains traditional high watchmaking excellence that’s otherwise lost in the pursuit of slimness.

Perfecting The Art Of Slenderness
If one’s to ideate a fictitious wish list for perfect dress watch ingredients, it would very much resemble the spec-sheet of the new 1815 timepiece from A. Lange & Söhne. A watch just 6.4 millimeters thick (actually thin), a dainty 34 millimeters across with a classic small-seconds layout and a newly developed hand-wound movement is available with a choice of pink- or white-gold for the case that envelops a gorgeous deep blue dial crafted from 925 silver. Despite shedding 2.4 millimeters over the current 1815 iteration, none of the elements including the railway-track minute scale, applied Arabic numerals and lancet-shaped hands have been sacrificed in realization of a slender form.

The new watch is synonymous with the horological ambition of Ferdinand Adolph Lange who realized his vision of perfecting the amalgam of precision, functionality and elegance in early pocket watches. The watch in its nomenclature pays tribute to the man as 1815 refers to F.A. Lange’s birth year, and follows his tradition in a contemporary realization.
An All-New Manufacture Caliber
The L152.1 mechanical movement for the new 1815 timepiece is the 75th caliber produced by Lange since its re-establishment in 1990. That’s a feat impressive in all regards. The hand wound L152.1 caliber newly developed for the 1815 is an ultra-thin movement. Despite its lean proportions of just 28.1 millimeters across and a height of 2.9 millimeters, it produces an impressive autonomy of 72 hours. Apart from its height, nothing is discreet about this impressive caliber that can be admired through a sapphire crystal caseback.

The movement is consistent in high watchmaking execution, a signature of A. Lange & Söhne. The caseback lends a view to its hand-engraved balance cock and the delectable German silver three-quarter plate decorated with Glashütte striping. It features four screwed gold chatons for bearing the jewels and they’re secured with thermally blued screws.
An Uncompromising Approach To Ultra-Thin Watchmaking
It’s common in watchmaking that the whisker of extra slenderness comes at a cost. With the new 1815 from A. Lange & Söhne, that’s not the case. It’s a very decent device that flourishes in both form and function. The new 1815 launched at Watches and Wonders 2025 will be available in white-gold paired with a blue leather strap and in pink-gold that comes with a reddish-brown strap. Case matching materials have been used for the polished prong buckle as well.
