Watches And Wonders 2026: Patek Philippe Just Turned an Alarm Clock Into a Grand Complication
Not all complications are about telling time more precisely, some are about making sure you don’t miss it altogether. With the Reference 5322G, Patek Philippe brings the alarm function back into focus, turning a practical reminder into a refined grand complication that quite literally makes itself heard. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2026, this new model puts the spotlight firmly on its 24-hour alarm, designed to chime on a classic gong. It is a complication that feels intuitive in daily life, whether marking an appointment or a moment worth remembering, but here it is elevated with the finesse expected from high watchmaking.

The watch builds on the legacy of the Patek Philippe Pilot Travel Time 5520 introduced in 2019, but takes a more focused approach. Instead of combining multiple travel functions, the 5322G strips things back, centering everything around the alarm. The result is a cleaner, more balanced execution housed in a Calatrava-style white gold case, complete with the signature Clous de Paris hobnail guilloché. The dial leans into a modern aesthetic while maintaining excellent legibility. Available in either blue or green lacquer, it features a subtle gradient that darkens towards the edges, along with a granular texture that adds depth. Applied Arabic numerals and syringe-style hands in white gold, both treated with luminescent coating, stand out clearly. A white-painted steel seconds hand sweeps across a railway-style minute track, while the date is displayed at six o’clock with a dagger-shaped hand, the numeral “1” discreetly highlighted in red.
The upper half of the dial is dedicated to the alarm. A bell-shaped aperture at 12 o’clock indicates whether the alarm is active or not, switching from white to black. Just below, a double aperture shows the programmed alarm time, with hours and minutes displayed in quarter-hour increments. A day/night indicator completes the setup, allowing the alarm to be set up to 24 hours in advance. The 41 mm white gold case stays true to the Calatrava’s refined proportions, but introduces a few thoughtful twists. The openworked lugs and the continuous Clous de Paris guilloché around the caseband add texture and character, while the construction ensures water resistance to 30 metres, making it the only water-resistant chiming watch currently in the collection.

The crown, positioned at 4 o’clock, controls multiple functions depending on its position. It winds both the movement and the alarm barrel, sets the alarm time, and adjusts the time itself. A single pusher at 2 o’clock activates or deactivates the alarm, while a discreet corrector on the caseband adjusts the date. Turning the watch over reveals the new caliber AL 30-660 S C through a sapphire caseback. Derived from an earlier movement, this version removes the Travel Time function to focus entirely on the alarm and date. Despite its 524 components, it remains impressively slim at 6.6 mm. A central rotor in 21K gold powers the movement, while a Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring ensure precision in line with the Patek Philippe Seal.
The alarm mechanism itself is designed to be both simple and secure. It can only be activated when the striking barrel is fully wound, preventing accidental misuse. Around ten turns of the crown are enough to prepare it, with tactile feedback indicating when it is ready. Once the energy is used, the alarm automatically switches off. What truly sets this watch apart is how it sounds. Instead of a direct strike against the caseback, the hammer hits a coiled gong, much like a minute repeater. An inertial governor regulates the rhythm, producing around 90 strikes at a steady tempo of 2.5 beats per second. The result is a clear, refined chime rather than a simple buzz.

The watch is delivered with two interchangeable straps. The primary strap matches the dial, with either a blue composite or green alligator option, while a second beige nubuck calfskin strap offers a softer contrast. A patented triple-blade fold-over clasp makes switching between them quick and easy. With the Reference 5322G, Patek Philippe takes a complication rooted in everyday practicality and transforms it into something far more expressive. It is a reminder that in watchmaking, even the simplest idea can be elevated into something exceptional.
