LVMH Watch Week 2022 has surely started on a colourful note, and Zenith is here to amplify this with its new launch DEFY 21 CHROMA. Zenith has gained a particular skill when it comes to colours that are unexpected, thanks to the DEFY collection, the brand’s most original and forward-thinking line.
When it comes to transferring high-frequency chronometry into light and colour frequencies, the sky’s the limit, whether it’s dazzling gem-set pieces, the DEFY 21 Ultra series of extremely multicoloured movements, or even artistic collaborations. The Manufacture is expressing this concept in its cleanest and brightest form yet with the new DEFY 21 Chroma.
Since white is a mixture of all the colours in the visible light spectrum, it was only natural to make the DEFY 21 Chroma’s casing out of white porcelain with an all-over matte surface to give the perfect contrast and showcase the colours within. A refracted rainbow spreads evenly across the open dial and movement, with a smoothly transitioned gradation of colours spanning the full-colour spectrum, starting with red at 12 o’clock and moving clockwise through orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and pink.
The hand-applied colours on the markers and 1/100-second scale extend beyond the dial and into the case, with the crown’s rubber grip ring and the white cordura-effect rubber strap’s stitching matching the dial’s colour scheme. This includes the chronograph counter hands, which are all tipped in distinct tones.
The dial, which is vastly open and allows a peek into the innovative 1/100th of a second chronograph mechanism beneath, has raised white chronograph counters that match the casing, beneath which the exquisitely adorned movement shines through. Each bridge is a distinct metallic colour, following the gradient of the dial’s markers once again.
The El Primero 21 automatic high-frequency 1/100th of a second chronograph, visible through the sapphire case back, is at the pinnacle of performance and precision, with two independent regulating organs and gear trains for the timekeeping and chronograph functions, operating at frequencies of 5Hz (36’000 VpH) and 50Hz (360’000 VpH), respectively.
The DEFY 21 Chroma, which is limited to 200 pieces and available at Zenith boutiques and authorised retailers around the world, demonstrates the Manufacture’s mastery of the high-frequency automatic 1/100th of a second chronograph while also introducing an unprecedented and playfully vibrant palette of colours where least expected for a high-performance chronograph with truly no equal.
