Sushmita Sen Lets Out A Secret At The Nebula By Titan Art Deco Collection Launch Event
On a rainy evening at the iconic InterContinental Dome, Mumbai, the watchmaking community witnessed a truly remarkable event - the launch of Nebula By Titan Art Deco collection. Located at the heart of a glittering sweep of Art Deco buildings on Marine Drive in Mumbai, a city that has the second largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world, the venue further elevated the charm of the event. This significant architectural ensemble has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and represents the making of modern Bombay, as it was then known. The location was thoughtfully chosen for the launch to celebrate the genesis of this contemporary collection with vintage charm.
Guests were taken back in time to the opulent age of Art Deco at this event, which was graced by the presence of Sushmita Sen, a timeless beauty, and Suparna Mitra, the visionary CEO of Titan, Watches And Wearables Division. The launch ceremony was a celebration of grace, craftsmanship, and the history of timekeeping with a blend of grandeur and innovation.
Each timepiece was a work of art that combined cutting-edge engineering with classic Art Deco design features. The watches radiated a classic elegance and charm that wonderfully encapsulated the spirit of the time.
As Suparna Mitra said, “Nebula by Titan has been around for almost 25 years, but it’s coming into its own now. 18k gold watches studded with precious stones - the timepieces are alluring. This launch underscores our commitment to creating an immersive experience for our buyers through a blend of excellence in design, precision technology and a cohesive narrative of inspiration. ”
Art Deco, known for its geometric patterns, sleek lines, and luxurious materials, served as the core inspiration for this exquisite collection. The event's venue was adorned with Art Deco decor, with glistening chandeliers, bold geometric shapes, and sumptuous velvets, recreating the glamour of the roaring twenties.
Sushmita Sen, the epitome of grace and poise, graced the event with her presence. We caught up in an exclusive interview with her to discuss how watches empower women personally and professionally and more!
When asked do watches empower women, both personally and professionally, she said, “They do. It's like growing up, the first introduction to the value of time was introduced by my father, who, of course, being defense personnel, was always about punctuality. You have to respect time. So automatically, a way to respect it is to get used to the idea of wearing a watch. And it was never something that was gifted to my brother first, for instance. It was gifted to me first. Now when I look back, I think my life has been defined by many firsts. And I taught my brother how to read time and how to have a watch and not be late for classes, not be late for anything, never have an excuse. So it empowered you with a sense of responsibility. This was the way to measure it and that's how it started. As you go through life and your horizons broaden, you meet with more people, you have richer experiences, and then you start to aspire for those timepieces. They tell a different story. Professionally, other than being an actor who's also been a part of launching or endorsing certain brands, it's a personal collection that I enjoy. I enjoy it on so many different levels. It kind of is something that I leave behind as a legacy also eventually.”
Next, she went on to share what intrigues her the most about our very own homegrown brand, Nebula? “When you've been in the public domain and have had a history with the Indian families and people since 1984, this, of course, Nebula started in 1997. I had a very special story, actually, I wanted to say this when it comes to Titan. My father, before he named me Sushmita, the pet name I have in Bengali is Titan, which is spelt exactly as Titan, which means exactly what Titan means - something important, powerful, and courageous. So my father wanted that for me and named me that. So one of the earlier gifts I got was a Titan watch from my father. It was that very thin, tiny dial with it. So it took me back to that memory. Thank you guys at Nebula and Tata's and, of course, Titan for completing that journey for me. From having that watch that might have been an aspirational one at that time, to finally launching the Art Deco collection for Nebula. This is very special. That's a full circle”, she further added.
Lastly, we asked her which timepiece would she pass down to Alisah and Renee. “Alisah and Renee have a very simple thing. Every time I buy anything, the first one to say, I book it, gets it. So right now, it really isn't about what I leave behind. It's what they've booked.”
On that note and as Sushmita rightly said, timepieces and women isn’t about empowering them but more a celebration. And this event was just the right blend of heritage and celebration!
