Few watches have reshaped modern luxury quite like the Patek Philippe Nautilus. As it marks its 50th anniversary in 2026, Patek Philippe celebrates the icon not by reinventing it, but by refining what made it enduring in the first place. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2026, four limited-edition creations revisit the Nautilus through its purest expressions. Across the collection, the focus is clear: the essence of the design, its instantly recognisable architecture, and the slender elegance that has defined it since 1976.

Leading the lineup are two “Jumbo” 41 mm references in white gold. The Reference 5810/1G-001 pairs the case with a matching metal bracelet, while the Reference 5810G-001 opts for a composite strap. Both return to a minimalist display of hours and minutes, allowing the geometry of the Nautilus to take centre stage. Their ultra-slim 6.9 mm profile is made possible by the legendary self-winding caliber 240, first introduced in 1977, just a year after the Nautilus itself.

A third wristwatch, Reference 5610/1P-001, brings a slightly more compact 38 mm case in platinum. Echoing the proportions of earlier mid-size Nautilus references, it maintains the same pared-back approach to time display while reintroducing a size that recalls the Reference 3800 of the 1980s. The platinum case, finished with alternating satin-brushed and polished surfaces, features a discreet diamond set into the hinge at 9 o’clock, a signature detail of Patek Philippe’s platinum pieces.

Completing the anniversary collection is a bold and unexpected creation: the Nautilus desk watch Reference 958G-001. Crafted in white gold and powered by an 8-day manually wound caliber, it reimagines the Nautilus form without a bracelet while preserving every element of its design language. It is both a nod to the disruptive spirit of the 1970s and a striking reinterpretation of the collection today.

When it first appeared in 1976, the Nautilus broke with convention. Its use of steel in a luxury context, combined with a case design that was neither round nor rectangular, challenged traditional watchmaking codes. The now-iconic octagonal bezel with softened corners was inspired by a ship’s porthole, with a construction that reflected this origin. The two-part case, secured by lateral hinges and clamped by screws, ensured water resistance while maintaining a slim profile, an impressive technical achievement at the time. From the outset, the Nautilus balanced robustness with refinement. The interplay of polished and satin-brushed finishes enhanced its sculptural form, while the horizontally embossed dial added depth and character. Its integrated bracelet, tapering seamlessly into the clasp, reinforced its identity as the ultimate expression of sporty elegance.

Over five decades, the Nautilus has evolved through various materials, sizes and complications, yet its core design has remained unchanged. These anniversary editions embrace that continuity. The two 41 mm references, 5810/1G-001 and 5810G-001, highlight this philosophy through restraint. Their dials feature the signature horizontal embossing and sunburst finish, paired with baton-style hour markers and hands in white gold with luminescent coating. The bracelet version emphasises purity, while the strap version introduces baguette-cut diamond hour markers for a more refined interpretation. Both house the ultra-thin caliber 240, visible through a sapphire caseback, with its 22K gold mini-rotor engraved “50 1976 – 2026”. The bracelet model is limited to 2,000 pieces, while the strap version is produced in 1,000 examples.

The 38 mm Reference 5610/1P-001 continues this minimalist direction. Its blue sunburst dial, combined with white gold markers and hands, ensures clarity and elegance. Inside, the same caliber 240 drives the watch, maintaining its slim proportions. The platinum bracelet mirrors the finishing of the case, and the model is also limited to 2,000 pieces.

The desk watch Reference 958G-001 takes a different path. Its 50.65 mm white gold case retains the Nautilus silhouette, from the rounded octagonal bezel to the porthole-inspired construction. The blue dial, with its horizontal embossing, is elevated by baguette-cut diamond hour markers. On the reverse, a hinged cover reveals a decorative panel centred on a Calatrava cross, while beneath it lies the manually wound caliber derived from the 8-day movement introduced in the Calatrava collection. This movement offers an extended power reserve of eight days, with a ninth in reserve, thanks to twin barrels connected in series. It also incorporates a Pulsomax escapement and Spiromax balance spring, alongside additional indications including instantaneous date, day display and power reserve. The hinged cover doubles as a stand, allowing the watch to sit securely on a desk.

All four anniversary pieces are presented in a special cork presentation case, a tribute to the original Reference 3700 packaging and the 40th anniversary editions. Production remains limited, with the desk clock restricted to just 100 pieces. In line with the brand’s updated standards introduced in 2024, the three wristwatches offer water resistance to 30 metres, tested both in air and underwater. This unified standard ensures clarity for everyday use, from daily wear to light aquatic activity.

Fifty years on, the Nautilus remains as relevant as ever. These anniversary editions do not attempt to redefine it. Instead, they underline why it became an icon in the first place.
