Unleashing Hyper Horology™: The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph Unveiled
Roger Dubuis is a watchmaker known for its innovative and expressive designs, drawing inspiration from the world of motorsport. Their latest creation, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph, showcases cutting-edge technology and a fusion of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation.
The Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph marks the return of the chronograph complication to Roger Dubuis' collections, following the success of the Monovortex Split-Seconds Chronograph. This timepiece represents a significant step forward in terms of complexity and technique, reflecting the brand's deep connection to motorsport.
The RD780 Calibre Revealed
Powered by the new RD780 flyback chronograph caliber, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph offers seamless functionality. The chronograph can be instantly restarted while it is still running, thanks to its sophisticated Flyback mechanism. Unlike modular approaches, Roger Dubuis has integrated the chronograph complication into the movement itself, resulting in a more cohesive and esthetically pleasing design.
One notable feature is the column wheel located at 6 o'clock, a symbol of technical excellence. Roger Dubuis has meticulously crafted the column wheel and made it visible from the front, enhancing both its functionality and visual appeal. The vertical clutch, another remarkable component of the caliber, improves the accuracy of starting the chronograph and adds a touch of supercar design inspiration.
The caliber also boasts a patent-pending Second Braking System (SBS) within the clutch, reducing flickering and enhancing stability. Precision is further enhanced by the innovative 120° Rotating Minute Counter (RMC) at 3 o'clock, which features a unique tripartite hand for easy readability.
Performance For Modern Life
In addition to its technical prowess, the RD780 caliber offers a generous power reserve of 72 hours and is designed to withstand the challenges of shock, gravity, and magnetism. The balance wheel is tilted at 12° to counteract the effects of gravity, while the diamond-coated silicon escapement wheel and pallet-stones provide exceptional anti-magnetic properties. The exceptional craftsmanship of the RD780 caliber is evident in its Poinçon de Genève certification, which requires each component to be meticulously decorated by hand. This certification is a testament to the watch's exceptional engineering and represents one of the highest standards in fine watchmaking.
The 45 mm watch is not only distinguished by its impressive movement but also by its striking exterior. Pushing the boundaries even further, the case is skillfully crafted from lightweight carbon, featuring sharp lines and distinctive notches that are characteristic of the Excalibur Spider collection. This design exudes a sense of streamlined aesthetics that highlights the essence of speed. Complementing the case are skeletonized pushers and a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel that maintains its luster over time. Together, the combination of carbon and ceramic pays homage to the construction of high-performance cars, where these materials are often used in critical components such as brakes.
Upon closer inspection, the timepiece reveals a multidimensional design that captivates the observer. Roger Dubuis has masterfully created a layered effect with various surfaces at different angles and heights. From the floating tachymeter scale to the raised seconds hand and lower date display, these parallel surfaces offer a dynamic and expressive construction that unveils new details with every glance.
Even the rear of the watch provides awe-inspiring inspiration. The rotor, resembling a supercar's wheel rim, features five arms and is adorned with the signature sharp lines that define Roger Dubuis. This further exemplifies the deep connection between motorsport and the Maison's craftsmanship.
Moving to the wrist, the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph is presented on a black rubber strap, designed with notches to add volume. The inner layer of the strap showcases a distinctive pattern reminiscent of tire marks, emphasizing the association with high-performance vehicles.
Prepare for an exhilarating ride as the Excalibur Spider Flyback Chronograph makes its adrenaline-fueled debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023. As the Official Timing Partner of this renowned celebration of car culture, Roger Dubuis is proud to unveil its latest timepiece at this year's extraordinary event, taking place from July 13th to July 16th.
