Watches & Wonders 2022 : PANERAI - The new mid-sized QuarantaQuattro in a new size and material

In addition to the 47mm and 42mm Submersible dive watches, this year at Watches & Wonders 2022, Panerai has introduced a new 44mm case for the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro. This tool watch comes in three distinct variations each with an individual pairing to material and colours. Let's dive in.
First up is the Submersible QuarantaQuattro CarbotechTM Blu Abisso (PAM01232). Just as the name suggests, this case is made of the lightest material employed by the brand Carbotech. Based on a carbon fibre composite, Carbotech is highly resistant to scratches and corrosion besides being lighter than even titanium, hence extremely light on the wrist. The inherent variegated black coloring of the carbotech ensures that no two cases will be the same. To wrap it up, the dial and the coordinating straps are a deep blue colour representing the color of the deep undersea blue.
Next up is the PAM01229 - a rendition of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro with a classic steel case and black dial featuring contrasting white Super-LumiNovaTM on its hands, dots and indices. This edition is available with a black rubber strap and a dark gray fabric strap, dramatising it further.
And as they say save the best for the last, the highlight for us this year in this collection is the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco (PAM01226). A brilliant white dial with a brushed steel case on a versatile military green strap.
All these new Submersible QuarantaQuattro’s are water-resistant up to 300 meters, with Panerai’s patented crown-protecting device that is inextricably linked to the brands history of marine adventure. In addition, a uni-directional rotating bezel to measure submersion time and metallic appliques filled with white Super-LumiNovaTM make the watch an indispensable diving instrument. The P.900 caliber features a seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and supplies a three-day power reserve.
Another distinguished feature that further heightens the legibility of its face is an improved date window, a detail that will be implemented throughout the Submersible collection.
All the timepieces are characterized by the Panerai’s consistent commitment to encouraging environmentally conscious practices: the first rubber strap is made from 30% of recycled materials while, like all the straps from the Submerisble QuarantaQuattro offering, the second one is composed of 68% recycled fabric material. A tool to allow interchangeability of the straps and a screwdriver for removing the buckle also accompany the Submersible QuarantaQuattro and the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Bianco watches.
To further reduce the ecological impact of the watch industry, Panerai has also introduced the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM. 72g of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM is made of recycled materials, corresponding to 52% of the total weight of the watch (that is 137g). ESteelTM has the same properties as conventional steel, including identical chemical behaviour, physical structure and resistance to corrosion, making the metal a natural companion for the iconic Submersible collection of diving watches. An engraving on the crown protection device and inscription on the dial indicate the presence of eSteelTM.
The aesthetics on the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM watches are quite pleasing, with a very unique vibe. There is the QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM Verde Smeraldo with a green polished gradient dial, the QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM Grigio Roccia with an anthracite polished gradient dial and finally a dark blue gradient version - the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM Blu Profondo.
An interesting feat for this collection is the high gloss surface on the unidirectional ceramic bezel : a first of its kind for Panerai. The watches are powered by that is only 4.2mm thick and supports Sporting a date indication and a three day power reserve, the new Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM watches are powered by caliber P.900. Yet again the two matching straps included with each watch, are composed of either fabric made from recycled PET or recycled rubber. Just like all Panerai watches now, the strap interchangeability can be done at the comfort of your own home with the tools accompanying every watch.
With the introduction of a new size (44mm) for the Submersible QuarantaQuattro collection, Panerai has made this collection more accessible to those who found the 47mm’s too large and the 42mm’s inadequate. The use of carbotech along with a highly polished ceramic bezel, makes this PAM quite versatile. From new sizes to new materials, 2022 seems like the year of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro for Panerai.
