The Indian luxury watch market is witnessing a subtle yet significant shift in consumer preferences, particularly when it comes to the age-old debate of gold versus two-tone timepieces. While gold has long reigned supreme in the subcontinent, recent trends indicate a growing appreciation for two-tone watches, reflecting both global influences and uniquely Indian sensibilities.

Gold's Enduring Allure
Traditionally, gold luxury watches have dominated the Indian market, their popularity deeply rooted in cultural and economic factors. Gold's status as a symbol of wealth and prosperity in Indian society has naturally extended to timepieces. Brands like Rolex, Omega, and Cartier have long capitalized on this preference, offering a wide range of gold models that appeal to the Indian elite.

Bharat Kapoor and Gaurav Bhatia of Art Of Time shared their views on this and said, "There is a lot of interest right now in both gold and two-tone watches. Although it would be hard to tell which one is more in demand, both are hot sellers. From a price point perspective, the Two tone is definitely more popular and widely available than Gold. We also see a shift between the two seasonally. For instance around the festivities, the demand for gold watches spikes up, while two-tone watches are a more evergreen choice. The wearability and versatility factor also kind of favours the two-tone but when there is a wedding in the family, gold shines brightly."

The appeal of gold watches in India goes beyond mere aesthetics. With gold being a traditional form of investment, luxury watches in the precious metal are often seen as wearable assets. This dual purpose of adornment and investment has kept demand strong, particularly among older, more established buyers.

The Two-Tone Renaissance
However, the market is evolving. Two-tone watches, combining gold and steel elements, are experiencing a renaissance in India. This trend is particularly noticeable among younger, urban professionals who seek a balance between luxury and practicality. The versatility of two-tone watches, which can complement both gold and silver jewelry, resonates with the modern Indian consumer's desire for flexibility in their accessories.

When we asked retailer Mayank Barodia, Owner of Gangoly Brothers, on the shifting preferences he said, "Gold and two-tone watches each offer distinct characteristics and appeal. Gold watches are known for their luxurious, classic aesthetics and are often considered status symbols. They tend to hold or even appreciate in value due to the intrinsic worth of gold. These timepieces are typically heavier, which some find substantial and luxurious. However, they require careful maintenance to avoid scratches and maintain their luster. Gold watches are often reserved for formal or special occasions due to their opulent appearance.

In contrast, two-tone watches offer versatility with their striking contrast and contemporary design. They can seamlessly blend with both casual and formal attire, making them suitable for various settings. Two-tone watches are generally lighter than their full gold counterparts and are easier to maintain. While they may not appreciate in value as much as gold watches, they still hold their worth well, especially those from reputable brands.

When choosing between gold and two-tone watches, consider your personal preferences and lifestyle. Opt for a gold watch if you prefer a luxurious, classic timepiece that makes a strong statement. Choose a two-tone watch if you want a versatile, stylish option that balances luxury with practicality. Remember that the reputation and craftsmanship of the watch brand play a significant role in the timepiece's value and appeal, regardless of whether it's gold or two-tone. This approach is my personal choice too.

Both gold and two-tone watches from reputable brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Omega tend to have strong resale markets. However, full gold watches might have an edge in appreciation potential. Ultimately, the choice between a gold watch and a two-tone watch comes down to personal preference, lifestyle, and budget."

In India, gifting culture as well as the education about luxury watches is at an all-time high. People are interested in having a timepiece that strongly resonates with them. Retailer Supal Doshi of Luxury Time also shared his thoughts on this on going trend saying, "As for models, steel and steel+gold enjoy equal popularity. However, Jubilee bracelet versions sell more than Oyster bracelets. I'd estimate a 60-40 split favoring steel and gold. Gujaratis tend to prefer flashes of gold as they usually dress simple, without much flair. Our weather doesn't warrant seasonal attire changes. Gold provides that extra touch despite their basic clothing. Sometimes they even just opt for plain gold models."

If you seek a timeless, luxurious piece that makes a bold statement, a gold watch might be perfect. If you prefer versatility, durability, and a contemporary aesthetic with a touch of luxury, a two-tone watch could be ideal.
